This Easter Sunday we spent the day together as a family & visited our local zoo in the city the Wilhelma Botanical Gardens & Zoo. It's about a 10 minute drive into the city from where we live or a 20 minute bus ride. We had been once before with Kirk's parents on a beautiful January day but we decided that we wanted to go back, purchase our seasons pass, & see more of the park that we did not get to see the previous visit. The zoo is open 365 days a year & over 70 acres. Some of the buildings that house the exhibits are an from an old private estate in the mid 19th century for King Ludwig Wilhelm I.
The zoo/gardens are enormous & hard to believe they are even there from the outside. We drive past it all the time & you could never guess the actual size of it until you walk around. There are parks, play structures, a few restaurants, areas for lounging & several exhibits. We are excited to just be able to go down on a whim & spend an afternoon there with the kids taking our time & seeing the things that we haven't or going to our favorite parts again & again. The grounds are very beautiful & ornate and , unlike a zoo in the US, there are many open areas to sit & enjoy the scenery or just people watch. You see several families pulling around wagons that are full to the brim with blankets & coolers..maybe even a child or two. We are looking forward to putting our passes to good use, especially this summer with the kids out of school.
